West London Waste Authority manages the waste produced by 1.7 million residents across west London and this new service will help provide alternative solutions to residents disposing of these items in the general waste.
Clothes and textiles are the second most polluting industry in the world, and there are approximately 18,000 tonnes of textiles disposed of as rubbish across west London each year, or 300,000 tonnes nationally. Textile waste results in over 5% of the UK’s annual carbon and water footprint – of these disposed of textiles, only 16% are reused. West London Wastes ultimate goal is to empower residents to treat unwanted textiles as a valuable resource.
While electronic devices, on average, each person in the UK buys 3 new electrical items each year – that’s about 170 million items across the UK.
However, only a small number of the electrical items already in the home, whether they’re broken or just unwanted, end up being recycled. Many of us are not aware that items such as irons, toasters and mobile phones can be recycled so they just end up sitting unused in a cupboard or drawer, or are simply thrown in the bin.
So by using this service offered by Traid it will prevent textiles and electronic waste ending up in landfill, even better will be recycled or upcycled.
