Our achievements
As of February 2026, our Free school uniform project which started in August 2025 has helped over 265 local families by getting free school uniform. This has helped save money for the families and also:
- saved over 800 items from landfill/incineration
- saved nearly 1980 kg of carbon of climate change causing green house gases (also known as CO2e)
- saved over 330,000 litres of water (that’s enough drinking water to last 370 people for an entire year)
Together, let’s keep saving money and resources by supporting this project and the local Circular Economy.
Reuse and recycle school uniform
For a sustainable future, we need to normalise the reusing of pre-loved and second hand school uniform to reduce waste, whilst helping families in need of support. Up to 1.4 million school uniforms, many of which could be reused, are thrown away every year. Many of the garments contain high levels of polyester, that is equal to around 350 tonnes of plastic. Over the last decade, clothing has become the fastest growing stream of waste in the UK, and it now represents the fifth biggest environmental footprint of any industry in the UK.
Around £52 million is spent each year on new items with parents, guardians and carers discarding uniform that still has lots of wear in it. Uniform which has been worn should be reused.
By extending the life of clothing by just nine months can reduce carbon and water usage by up to 10%. This will also help reduce the huge amount of clothing that is sent abroad each year. See Fashion ‘lays waste to wetlands’ for the fashion dumps in Ghana.
So join in the Ealing Uniform free shop and swap, by donating school uniform that is no longer needed and/or taking free pre-loved school uniform your children can wear. Our school uniform project is easy to take part in by either giving donations, taking donations or both. It’s about helping families by saving money on buying uniform and getting everyone to wear their clothes for longer.
