Ealing Repair Cafe: Repair Clothes and Reduce Waste

Need help on how to repair clothes? Let Ealing Repair cafe teach you how to mend your clothes. Pop along to one of their meet ups in January, listed below.

Ealing Repair cafe volunteers will teach you how to patch and darn, using hand sewing at their gatherings around Ealing and Acton. At their sessions they bring hand sewing equipment, fabric scraps and samples. Additionally, some sessions they have sewing machines available to use. They have everything to get you started in mending your clothes.

Ealing Repair café encourages the mending of clothes and textiles. They want to get more people valuing and wearing their clothes for longer and to move away from fast disposable fashion. The fashion industry is responsible for 8-10% of global emissions which contributes to climate change and UK shoppers buy more clothes than any other country in Europe. Water use is another big issue and cotton is very thirsty plant. For example, the making of a cotton t-shirt uses 2,700 litres of water, so lets make all those drops of water worth it by wearing it for longer.

Be inspired also by their upcycled clothes projects such as drawstring bags out of t-shirts and draught excluder out of old jeans, which they can show you on the day. Turning t-shirt into yarn is so satisfying.

All levels of sewing welcome, from beginners to advance, there’s always something new to share or learn. At some sessions there are sewing machines for alterations and mending seams. Their volunteers will be on hand to teach you on the simple steps to repair clothes. Pick up their darning and patching guide. A small donation of £4 is asked for at each session to cover costs.

Ealing Repair cafe also has lots of advice and information on their website so if you can’t make a session, check out Ealing Repair Cafe or Facebook.
