Donate any clothes hangers you can spare for Ealing’s free school uniform free shop and swaps. We need hangers and plenty of them. If you have any good quality hangers you no longer need, please donate them at one of the drop-off points across the borough.
The start of the academic year is an expensive time for families and the environment. Thanks to the Ealing School Uniform Swap on 16 August at ReActon, over 150 school uniform items were put back in use. This helped over 50 families who visited the swap.
The swap saved over 360kg of carbon and 60,000l of water.* To make these numbers easier to imagine, that’s the equivalent of driving a car 871 miles. It’s the amount of water that 67 people will drink in a year!*
Also, school uniform is often made of polyester. So these swaps have reduced the amount of new plastic demand. They have also cut the amount of un-recyclable plastic going to landfill or incineration.
Hanger appeal for future swaps
More swaps are coming up but your help is needed! Swaps need hangers and plenty of them. If you have any good quality hangers, please donate them at one of our drop-off points.
Did you know that the carbon footprint of a hanger is 160g?* So by donating hangers not only will you be supporting the success of these swaps. You will also by ensuring the resources (including plastic and carbon) that went into your hangers are being put to good use over and over again.

Make the difference
The goal is to inspire more people who live, learn or work in Ealing to understand the joy of sustainable fashion (and uniform). By making “re-use” easier and more accessible, everyone in the borough can save money, cut carbon, reduce pollution and strengthen Ealing’s sense of community – what’s not to love about that?

*These calculations are based on the following assumptions (AfE welcomes any expert advice to improve the accuracy of these calculations):
- Assuming the average weight of a school uniform item is 250g (exact weight will vary by item, size and fabric type)
- Using 23% Campaign ratio of 9.5 tonnes carbon saved per tonne of clothes – https://traid.org.uk/news/23percent-sixmonths/
- Using 23% Campaign ratio of 1.6 million litres water saved per tonne of clothes – https://traid.org.uk/news/23percent-sixmonths/
- Using 23% Campaign ratio of 2,445 miles driving a car to generate 1 tonnes of CO2 – https://traid.org.uk/news/23percent-sixmonths/
- Using 900l as the amount one person drinks in a year – https://www.openaccessgovernment.org/how-is-fast-fashion-polluting-our-water/77704/ (2,700 litres divided by 3 is one year’s drinking water for one human)
- Assuming a plastic hanger represents the average carbon footprint of hangers donated https://it-recycle.uk/are-plastic-hangers-recyclable-eco-friendly-choices/?utm_source=chatgpt.com
