Funding for Green Spaces and Waterways in Ealing

The Mayor of London is making funding available for projects that create and improve parks, green spaces, ponds and water ways. The closing date for applications to the Green Roots Fund is 22 January 2026 at 2pm. Some matched funding from another source is necessary for the funding application. Applications for funding are expected to be open twice a year, so if your project is not ready now, there may still be opportunities later on to apply for projects for green and blue space funding.

Well-managed, high-quality green and blue spaces in urban environments can both enhance biodiversity and restore nature bringing multiple health benefits. They provide shading and reduce areas of raised temperatures experienced in cities and urban spaces (urban heat islands), positively affect physical and mental health and wellbeing, and provide adaptation to extreme heat. The presence of such biodiverse natural spaces within urban infrastructure provides habitat for the declining species of pollinators. An example of natural space would be a diverse group of flowering plants and trees.

What is the Green Roots fund?

The Green Roots programme aims to help nature thrive in the city by giving London communities active ways to transform their local spaces. It focuses on making the environment better for all Londoners, while addressing issues such as inequality, biodiversity loss and climate resilience. The Green Roots Fund funds projects in London that improve: green spaces, including parks, trees and community gardens, and blue spaces, including wetlands, rivers and sustainable drainage.

Over £12m of green and blue space funding is available over three years, and grants of between £10,000 to £500,000 are available.

Who can apply?

Only formally-constituted organisations, that are not-for-profit, can apply. This means you must have an organisational bank account and be able to enter into legal contracts. Private individuals cannot apply. Supported projects can last up to two years. Only one application is needed. If applying as a partnership, the lead partner must be a public or civil society sector organisation.

How to apply?

The online application system will stay open most of the time, with some short closures for system updates. This means you can work on your application at a pace that suits you. There are five funding rounds between 2025 and 2027. If you are interested in applying for funding you can learn more from the programme prospectus here.
