Get involved in the Big Garden Birdwatch in January

Join the world’s largest garden wildlife survey with the Big Garden Birdwatch in January with the RSPB (Royal Society for the Protection for Birds). It’s fun, free and will only take an hour, whenever it suits you, from Friday 23 – Sunday 25 January. Thousands of nature lovers will be counting birds from their gardens, balconies, parks and local green spaces over one weekend.

Nature is counting on you. In the face of the nature and climate crisis, nature has never needed you more. So with Big Garden Birdwatch, this January, it’s easy to get involved.

Your results have been helping us to see how the UK’s garden birds have been faring since 1979. In 2025 across the UK, over 590,000 people took part in Big Garden Birdwatch, counting a whopping 9.1 million birds! House Sparrows took the top spot, but counts of these chirpy birds are down by 60% compared to the first Birdwatch in 1979. In fact, we’ve lost 38 million birds from UK skies in the last 60 years. With birds facing so many challenges, it’s more important than ever to get involved in the Birdwatch. Every bird you do – or don’t – count will give us a valuable insight into how garden birds are faring.

Take part in 2026, and you’ll be part of a community who are helping to turn things around. Plus, you don’t need to be an expert to Birdwatch. When you register, you’ll receive your free guide to help you ID your garden visitors.

Sign up to the Big Garden Birdwatch for free to:

1. Get your free guide and stock up on supplies, with 20% off and free delivery on food and feeders at the RSPB shop.
2. Spend an hour watching the birds in your patch, between 23 and 25 January, and record the birds that land.
3. Tell us what you saw (even if that’s nothing at all)! You can submit your results online or by post.
