Can water voles make a return to Ealing’s waterways? Join Ealing Wildlife Group for a free guided Kingfisher walk and water vole project. It will be along the River Brent on Saturday 31 October 2026, from 9.30am to 12.30pm. Walk along the Brent towards the Hanwell Viaduct and spot nature along the way, hoping to bump into a kingfisher. You will also find out about proposals to bring water voles back to Ealing.
Starting at Pear Tree Park Bistro in Perivale, the walk will follow the Brent towards the Hanwell Viaduct. Along the way, participants will have the opportunity to notice and learn more about the wildlife found along the river. You might spot one of Hanwell’s kingfishers.
The walk will be led by Sean McCormack from Ealing Wildlife group. Sean will talk about proposals to bring the water vole back to Ealing’s waterways. The water vole is affectionately known as “Ratty” from The Wind in the Willows. It’s a great opportunity to spend a morning exploring local nature. You will discover more about the wildlife on our doorstep. Plus hear about conservation work that could help support biodiversity in Ealing.

Water Voles
The water vole is under serious threat from habitat loss and predation by the American mink. Found along our waterways, it is similar-looking to the brown rat, but with a blunt nose, small ears and furry tail. The water vole is still widespread throughout mainland UK, though range and numbers have significantly declined. Find out more at The Wildlife Trusts – Water Vole.
