Wolf Fields, is an inspiring nature reserve in the heart of Southall with the aim is to engage the local community and enhance biodiversity and run by A Rocha UK. There are a great many volunteering opportunities around the site at Wolf Fields, that could lead onto Green Jobs in Ealing.
A Rocha UK acquired the three-acre Wolf Fields site in 2012. They transformed the abandoned patch of land into a community greenspace. The site was previously a brick works, and had 54 tonnes of rubbish cleared from it. It now has an orchard, community allotment, beehives, sensory garden, meadow, art installation area, prayer labyrinth, ponds and a story-telling arena for children. Nest boxes and a bird feeding station were some of the first improvements to attract wildlife. These additions have had a noticeable impact on the site’s species diversity.
Opportunities for volunteering at Wolf Fields:
- Sensory Garden: Revitalize the sensory garden, perfect for those volunteers interested in sensory experiences with nature.
- Food Growing at the community allotment: Contribute to sustainable food-growing allotment using eco-friendly methods like crop rotation and no-dig growing.
- General: Ideal for those volunteers looking to mix various roles and assist with diverse tasks around the site.
Volunteering Days: Every Tuesday and Wednesday, from 10:30 am to 4:00 pm.
How to Join: If you’re passionate about the environment and want to contribute, contact Andrew Samuel at andrew.samuel@arocha.org.
The sensory garden was designed by a local seven-year-old from Norwood Green Infant and Nursery School. It follows a simple five-petal flower design celebrating each of the senses. The garden was also developed in partnership with Ealing Association for the Blind whose members advised on the setting up of braille information boards and audio description stations. They have continued to enjoy visits to the sensory garden and attended work parties to help maintain the area.
The community allotment is a central part of the Wolf Fields. Fully organic, it produces food all year round. They grow and harvest potatoes, tomatoes, leeks, cabbage, onions, garlic, coriander, beans, and pumpkins. Community groups help to harvest our fruit and vegetables and celebrate at the popular annual harvest event. The community orchard contains more than 30 different native varieties of fruit trees and bushes, including apples, pears, cherries, plums and some more unusual trees such as mulberry, quince and medlar.
