Thames 21 are excited to announce that London Rivers Week will return next year from Friday 30th May to Sunday 8th June 2025 so save the date. Expect many free walks, talks, river clean-ups, cultural events and open webinars.
London Rivers Week is a week-long annual campaign. It inspires all to celebrate all of London’s rivers and the many projects taking place to protect them. Local to Ealing we have the campaigning group Clean up River Brent – CURB.
Thames21 is an environmental charity that works with communities to help transform the River Thames and its tributaries. Rivers, canals, and open water offer a refreshing escape from the demands of urban life. This is one of the key reasons why thousands of volunteers join us each year to rewild and safeguard them. They strive to reconnect communities with their rivers, improving the health of these waterways while enhancing well-being and fostering stronger community bonds along the way.

Rivers are crucial players in the natural world. They are critical to life on earth. Rivers are powerful agents for sustaining and restoring wildlife and communities, ensuring that each can thrive. However, freshwater ecosystems are the fastest declining habitat on earth.
- Internationally, freshwater species have declined by 88% since 1903.
- The Thames has made a remarkable recovery since it was declared biologically dead in the 1950s. Now its ecosystem is under threat again from pollution such as sewage effluent and river obstacles.
- The European eel, for example, remains critically endangered. Those eels that migrate up our rivers are currently blighted by a range of in-river obstacles. These obstacles such as weirs prevent them from dispersing further upstream.
