About the Speakers:

We’ll be joined by Jo from Wild Chiswick and Theresa from Ealing Hedgehog Friends, who will share their knowledge on all things hedgehog and what we can all do to help. Come along with any questions as it’s a great chance to learn more from the experts.

Ealing Hedgehog Friends was formed in 2023 and is a not-for-profit association formed to rescue and rehabilitate injured, ill, malnourished, and orphaned hedgehogs in Ealing and surrounding areas.

Wild Chiswick is a community-based not-for-profit organisation formed with the aim of increasing awareness of the wildlife around Chiswick.  They also conduct research and implement ways to help vulnerable species, such as helping improve habitats by drilling hedgehog highways, advising on wildlife gardening, installing swift boxes and making wildlife areas.

Boston Manor Park education officer Natasha Gavin will also be on-site to demonstrate the hedgehog environment in Boston Manor Park.

Hedgehogs are vital to ecosystems, playing an important role as natural pest controllers and in the diffusion of seeds. As an indicator species, their presence reflects a healthy ecosystem. However, hedgehog populations in Britain are in decline and are now listed as “Vulnerable” on the UK’s red list of mammals. Their numbers have fallen by up to 30% in urban areas and 50% in rural areas since 2000. There is no single cause and is due to a variety of factors (read more: https://www.warwickshirewildlifetrust.org.uk/hedgehogs/hedgehog-decline).

Come along to learn more about these much-loved animals, discover how Boston Manor Park is working to support and grow their local population, and take part in some hedgehog-related activities. While we can’t promise a live hedgehog sighting, we do have some exciting materials to get you a closer look at these wonderful creatures.

This event will include an outdoor element, so appropriate clothing and good walking shoes are recommended.
