Inspired to take action on waste, ActForEaling’s Enid Barron has created CUT THE CRAP. It is her response to the eyewatering amounts of rubbish we generate in the UK. She is calling upon Ealing residents to take urgent action to reduce waste.
‘Everyone in Ealing can do something about this,’ says Enid. She is affectionately known as ‘Eco Granny’ and a stalwart member of ActForEaling.
PLASTIC IS NOT FANTASTIC
‘I was horrified by a film showing plastic waste in our oceans . If we carry on, there will be more plastic than fish! ’ She is also distraught by the extent of food waste.
Because of this Enid decided to wage her own war on waste. For this reason, she recruited AfE colleagues to mount a pop-up exhibition. The triptych will travel to libraries, community centres and other public spaces, offering ideas on how to reduce waste and thus help ourselves and others.
WHERE TO SEE IT
The first stop on the tour is ActOne Cinema in Acton High Street. The display is in the foyer until Saturday May 25th. It will coincide with the cinema’s next climate emergency screening Between the Rains. The film is the Tribeca Festival’s best documentary for 2023.
LAUNCH EVENT
At the soft launch of CUT THE CRAP, representatives from Ealing environmental groups gathered for tea and cake. They gave feedback on the display and pledged their support. They also heard a talk by Ben Morris from Clean Up the River Brent. He explained how waste is impacting nature and wildlife and what CURB is doing to mitigate this.
PLEDGE TO DO BETTER
The AfE team asks visitors to put tokens into bottles and pledge to reduce waste by taking the following actions:
- Buy naked fruit and vegetables (not wrapped in plastic)
- Repair clothes when they get ripped or torn
- Recycle soft plastics at a supermarket
The campaign also stresses the importance of reducing and reusing generally. So, if neither of these is possible, only then do we recycle. CUT THE CRAP has lots of imaginative solutions to try.
NEXT ON THE TOUR
After its inaugural viewing at ActOne cinema, CUT THE CRAP moves to St Mary’s Church in Acton. It will then travel to other parts of the borough. For future dates and venues, please keep an eye on the website.
