About Six Inches of Soil

Six Inches of Soil tells the inspiring story of young British farmers standing up against the industrial food system. These young farmers transform the way they produce food, to heal the soil, our health and provide for local communities.

Given that approximately 178,000 farmers work in the UK and manage 71% of the UK’s land, these farms provide half of the food we eat. The current “industrial” mainstream farming practices significantly contribute to soil degradation, biodiversity loss and climate change.

Six Inches of Soil is a story of three new farmers on the first year of their regenerative journey to heal the soil and transform the food system. The film explores the sustainability of our food growing systems in the UK and was part of a program of ActForEaling events focussing attention on our food systems and nature restoration locally.

What is Regenerative Farming?

Regenerative farming as the Wildlife trust explains a phrase has been used since the 1980s. In the last 10 years that it has gained a higher profile and a far bigger following. As the name suggests, it is an approach to farming that, in theory, allows the land, the soil, water, nutrients, and natural assets to regenerate themselves. This is the opposite to conventional approaches to farming that can deplete these natural resources.

Six Inches of Soil have a great “Dig Deeper” part of their website, providing a wealth of resources and links. You can find links to other websites, and maps showing your nearest regenerative farming farm or regenerative food markets.
