Waste is a problem
Inspired to take action on waste, ActForEaling’s Enid Barron has created the CUT THE CRAP exhibition. This is her response to the eyewatering amounts of rubbish we generate in the UK. She is calling upon Ealing residents to take urgent action to reduce waste.
‘Everyone in Ealing can do something about this,’ says Enid, affectionately known as ‘Eco Granny’ and a stalwart member of ActForEaling.
Unfortunately, waste is everywhere. After a visit to the Materials Reprocessing Facility (MRF) in Crayford, which sorts our borough’s recycling, ActForEaling was inspired to spread the message that recycling is not enough. No matter how well our MRF functions, repurposing 48.89% of household waste, the sheer volume of rubbish is staggering. Instead of consuming so much, we can, as individuals, make different choices, opting to reduce and reuse instead.
This video at Veolia’s recycling plant in Southwark gives you an insight on what happens and how its sorted. Get tips on what can and cant be recycled, including how to avoid wishcycling. Wishcycling is waste that goes into a recycling bin in hopes of it being recycled, when it can’t or is unlikely to be recycled.
Enid feeling passionate to do something, decided to wage her own war on waste. For this reason, she recruited AfE colleagues to mount this pop-up exhibition. The CUT THE CRAP exhibition will travel to libraries, community centres and other public spaces. The exhibition offers ideas on how to reduce waste in Ealing and thus help ourselves and others.
Reduce, Reuse, Recycle
The campaign also stresses the importance of reducing and reusing items, making recycling a lesser priority. With lots of imaginative solutions to try, CUT THE CRAP will inspire you to think about what you consume and reduce your waste. Solutions include:
- Ealing Repair Cafe where you can learn how to mend your clothes
- Library of things Ealing where you can borrow instead of buying, reducing consumption.
- Reduce and Recycle hub in Acton Market
- LoveFoodHateWaste for lots of suggestions on how to reduce the food we waste
