ReLondon Reveals Environmental impact of Packaging

ReLondon releasing its a landmark report, London’s Packaging Footprint. The report covers the environmental impact of packaging, launches as part of Circular Economy Week 2024. From Monday 30 September to Sunday 6 October 2024, ReLondon is running the Annual Circular Economy Week.

ReLondon will reveal and explore the key insights and conclusions from this first-of-its-kind study. This was conducted in partnership with Valpak and ActforEaling’s partners’ WRAP, which examines the effects of London’s packaging supply chain. This innovative research provides a comprehensive mapping of packaging material flows across London city.

A staggering 2.21 million tonnes of packaging is consumed every day in London. Packaging is responsible for 4.1 million tonnes of CO2eq per year. This is equivalent to half of all transport emissions in London. Accounting for half of all packaging emissions, plastic packaging is the biggest contributor to London’s packaging footprint. So has the equivalent carbon impact of London’s entire fashion sector.

To better understand the dynamics at play in the capital, London’s packaging footprint maps material flows across the city’s packaging supply chain. The report assesses the impact that consumption and disposal of packaging. The report assesses materials such as plastic, paper, glass and other materials have on London’s greenhouse gas emissions. The results demonstrate an urgent need for systemic change. It highlights opportunities to lower the city’s carbon emissions across the supply chain.

Whether through incorporating more recycled content into our packaging, introducing more reusable and refillable options across the city or collecting and processing more used packaging for recycling. By ideally a combination of all three cities have the power to reduce the environmental impact of packaging.

The report launched on Thursday 4th October and you can watch the webinar and download the London Packaging Footprint report. For more information on the Circular economy week or email ceweek@relondon.gov.uk

  1. Whoa. “2.21 million tonnes of packaging is consumed every day in London.” I knew packaging was a huge issue but didn’t understand the magnitude.
