An area once covered by an extensive car park and an ancient gas works is now emerging as a flagship of green development in this vibrant area of the borough of Ealing.
Southall’s Green Quarter has been transformed from a former brownfield site into an attractive and sustainable area in which to live, work and play.
The Berkley Group sees itself as more than a conventional developer. Its vision is to create places which will enhance well-being, foster community spirit and benefit nature. It aims to build structures which are environmentally friendly in use, in construction methods and in the materials used.
Some examples of how the company is achieving this include:
- using construction machinery that is powered by biofuels;
- developing buildings that are energy efficient and use renewable energy for heating;
- using low carbon concrete;
- improving infrastructure including storm water alleviation tanks to guard against flooding and help provide irrigation.
Over 4,000 homes, of which 40% are affordable, will be delivered as well as shops, cafes, workspaces and parkland. There will be woodland and nine acres of wetland. The development will result in a 94% net gain in biodiversity.
Building thriving communities is a primary aim, so The Green Quarter has a dedicated Community Engagement team. Community facilities already delivered include a café, a creative hub, a pottery studio, Padel courts, a children’s jumping pillow and play areas as well as landscaped spaces.
One hundred and fifty community events have been organised at The Green Quarter since 2023.
It’s well worth visiting The Green Quarter in Southall to see what community focused, sustainable development can achieve.
