Why is it important to keep school uniform in circulation?

  • Reduce textile waste: help keep usable clothing out of landfill. An estimated 1.4 million wearable school uniforms are thrown away every year in the UK, many of which contain non-biodegradable synthetic fibres like polyester. Reusing them significantly lessens the amount of textile waste.
  • Support local families: these items go to those that need school uniform.  School uniforms can be expensive, with annual costs reaching hundreds of pounds per child. By giving away free uniform it can support low-income families.
  • Conserves resources: Circulating existing uniforms reduces the demand for new clothing production. By reducing clothes production it will save valuable natural resources like water and energy. For example, producing just one new T-shirt can use 2,700 litres of water.
  • Decreases pollution and carbon emissions: The fashion industry is a major source of pollution and carbon emissions. Throwing away uniforms contributes to wasted carbon emissions and water pollution from toxic dyes and microfibres.

Come along Saturday, 20 December from 10-12 noon to Southall Manor Café to pick up and/or drop off school uniform in Southall. This event is supported by ActForEaling, Ealing Council and Lets go Southall.

About Lets Go Southall
