Western Allotments in Southall are giving away up to 50 litres of compost for FREE to transform your garden on Thursday, 9th May from 10 am to 1 pm. Pop along for this free compost giveaway with a container and get some to use at your green space. Also on the day there will be activities such as garden tours, grow your own tips, children’s arts & craft, Ealing Council waste team will be there to share food waste reduction tips.
Compost is a valuable, dark, soil-like material you can create by mixing together things like garden trimmings and other organic matter. It’s a natural fertilizer, packed with nutrients that can help your garden grow. Compost can be used for mulching by covering bare soil with a thick layer of organic matter (biodegradable material) is an easy job that really benefits your soil and your plants, while also suppressing weeds. Western Road Allotments
This transformative urban garden project in Western Road is led by Southall Community Alliance (SCA), a registered charity. Alongside Ealing Parks Foundation (EPF) is proud to be part of the project along with other local groups and organisations. These includes Ealing Council, Southall Transition, Ealing Allotments Partnership, Feeding Ealing and LAGER Can.
Paul Carter, Chair of the Ealing Allotments Partnership, which works with the council to manage the Western Road and many spaces in the borough dedicated to food growing. Allotments like Western Road offer numerous benefits on multiple fronts. They serve as sanctuaries for relaxation and rejuvenation, as well as hubs for physical activity and fitness. Moreover, they serve as communal areas fostering social connections, a role that became particularly evident during the pandemic.
This free compost will fertilize and condition your soil to enhance your planting in your green space. You might consider entering the Biodiverse Front Gardens and Balconies Competition.
This competition is in collaboration with Cultivating Ealing and Ealing Council, ActForEaling. They are looking to find the most beautiful, biodiverse front gardens in the Ealing borough. It is free for residents to enter and there are cash prizes up for grabs for each category.
