On Sunday 20th October at 2:30 pm ActOne, the Acton Cinema, is showing I am the river, the river is me with a live Q&A.
Māori tribal leader Ned Tapa takes a group of friends and family on a canoe trip down the Whanganui River in Aotearoa/New Zealand, the first river in the world recognized as a legal person.
In 2017, the government of New Zealand (or perhaps more appropriately, Aotearoa, the indigenous Māori name for the land) recognised the Whanganui River as a legal person, as a living and indivisible being – the first worldwide. This designation of a non-human natural entity was not merely groundbreaking but has been seen as one step closer to the environmental respect needed to overcome the global climate crisis. The film’s title derives from a translation of a Māori phrase: Ko au te awa, ko te awa ko au. (https://cineuropa.org/en/newsdetail/459005/)
Māori river guardian Ned Tapa invites a First Nations Elder from Australia and his daughter on a five-day canoe trip. These dedicated activists want saving their own dying sacred river back home. Joining them on this trip are Ned’s friends, his family, an international film crew and Ned’s dog Jimmy.
This canoe trip becomes a call to action. As to draw closer to nature and fight climate change through a fundamental value shift. The film is a positive, urgent call to action for the rights of nature: now. This is the fastest-growing legal movement in the world.
After the film, the director Petr Lom and the producer Corinne van Egeraat will join via Zoom for a live Q&A.

ActOne Footprints film strand
This film is part of ActOne’s FOOTPRINTS film strand that runs on a regular basis. This is a fascinating series of screenings, discussions and Q&As that tackle environmental issues and climate colonialism. Films often focus on their disproportionate effects on indigenous peoples and people of the Global Majority.
