Join The Great Cable Challenge for International E-Waste Day!
Have you got one of ‘those’ drawers, filled with broken chargers and unused cables?
According to research from Recycle Your Electricals, the UK bins or stashes away 627 million cables. That’s enough to go to the moon AND BACK!
Did you know those cables are full of precious copper which could be recycled into anything from phones, transport, clean energy and even lifesaving medical equipment?!
What you can do!
Enter The Great Cable Challenge. If 1 million Brits recycled one cable, that would save at least 5 tonnes of copper from going to waste.
Celebrate International E-Waste day this Monday 14 October by clearing out that drawer of unused old cables. Then drop them off at your nearest collection point which can be found by clicking here. If you don’t have a clue about what the cables are for, this handy guide explains what they do.
What can old cables do?
The average UK home is holding onto an average of 15 cables and bins a further 8. These could be recycled into something new. Research from Recycle Your Electricals found there’s enough copper in unwanted and binned electricals to fulfil the UK’s annual demand for copper!
Recycling our old electricals to power clean energy
The Royal Society of Chemistry found the UK needs 347,000 tonnes of copper to build wind turbines and solar panels to achieve the UK’s 2030 renewable energy targets. At the moment, a lot of that copper needs to be mined which causes increased carbon emissions and pollution.
A third of the copper needed could come from the electricals the UK is currently throwing away or stashing in drawers. Release the power of your old electricals and recycle them at your nearest electrical collection point which can be found by clicking here.
