The incredibly popular “Kids for the Climate” pupil eco-group at Derwentwater Primary are determined to get to the bottom of local litter with a science-based litterpick.
Empowered pupils
As a school benefitting from the Sustainability Managers for Schools programme, pupils have been learning all about litter, where it comes from and where it goes. They enjoyed an inspiring visit from the brilliant Ealing-based LAGER Can and which taught them that they can be part of the solution. The pupils then developed a litter campaign idea and presented it in a dragon’s den style pitch to the school headteacher.
Thanks to support from staff and the school’s fabulous PTA, the DSA, pupils have planned a local litterpick in Acton Park accompanied with a little bit of science to understand how to stop litter in its tracks. To work out the main source of litter, they will be recording and analysing the types of litter collected and then developing ideas on easy life switches to reduce the litter at source.
The problems with plastic litter
Sabah, a Kids for the Climate member explained, “We’re doing this because plastic never leaves the earth. It turns into microplastics. First, plastics gets thrown out, over time it turn into little bits, then they end up in the air that people breathe in. Also, plastic ends up in the ocean, fish eat the plastic and then we eat the fish.”
Snezhina, a fellow Kids for the Climate member added, “Turtles eat plastic bags because they look like jellyfish. This makes me feel sad and makes me want to do something about it.”
The solutions to plastic litter
Maissa wanted to highlight how well they have organised the litterpick, “Litterpickers, bins bags and gloves will be provided. Please bring your own reusable water bottle and a no-wrapper snack. LAGER Can will be helping us.”
Eloise thought it was important to highlight the key solution to plastic pollution, “Please buy and use less plastic packaging. By making less litter it will be easier to have a cleaner and healthier community.“

Be part of the solution!
So, if you are anywhere near the Acton area, please support this brilliant pupil-led effort. Kids for the Climate have been learning that they are not alone in wanting a greener community. They have also learned they can make a difference. Maissa sums it up perfectly with her call to the community, “The world won’t change without us and…..YOU!”
