Southall Community Alliance made this inspiring short film on their ‘Plant to Plate’ project at the Western Road Urban Garden.
This film Plant to Plate involves local women in food growing. It was filmed last year and involved women from partner community groups in Southall. The film was funded by the Imperial Health Charity.
Their hope is that you find the film informative and inspiring. It’s about engaging local communities in green spaces and in growing food to reduce food poverty.
Western Road Urban Garden
This community green space in Southall Green will provide food, horticulture, leisure and community interaction. The site covers 2600 sq metres.
Southall Community Alliance (SCA) is leading on this transformative urban garden project in Western Road. Ealing parks foundation is also part of the project. This is with the help and support of other local groups and organisations. This includes Ealing Council, Southall Transition, Ealing Allotments Partnership, Feeding Ealing and LAGER Can.
On the site they plan a community orchard, poly tunnels, an eco toilet and storage facilities. It will be a volunteering hub for this most deprived area.

They aim to work with socially isolated Black Minority Ethnic residents, young people and vulnerable older adults. They are creating an accessible community green space.
The vision is to create an environmental hub that will help educate people about improving their environment, learn about food growing and gain the skills to look after a large green space.
The Western Road Allotments connects with nearby World War 2 bunkers but have fallen into neglect. The site was overgrown with weeds and bushes and has become a hotspot for antisocial behaviour.
A vast amount of dumped waste and fly-tips has been removed from the site and volunteers. The council’s park rangers also have been working hard to prepare the ground and source materials. However, there is still plenty of work to be done.
If you would like to help out, there is a regular volunteer drop-in session every Wednesday from 11am-2pm. If you have a particular skill, such as carpentry or joinery that you could offer the project, they would love to hear from.
