Green growth in Ealing’s schools

Delivering green growth

New green jobs, skills and opportunities have been rolling out across Ealing with the start to the new school year. Three schools across Acton, Greenford and Southall have been introduced to their dedicated Sustainability Managers. These Sustainability Managers will be supporting school communities (pupils and adults alike) to become more sustainable.

Thanks to a pioneering partnership with Ealing Council, Sustainability Managers for Schools C.I.C. (“SMS”) has launched this exciting pilot programme to meet the net zero goals of Ealing Council, the Department for Education and the UK Government. Schools will save money, cut carbon and empower pupils to shape sustainability activity in their classrooms and communities.

Ealing schools benefit

Christopher Richards, Headteacher of Villiers High School in Southall commented, “We’re thrilled to have been selected as one of the three local schools to benefit from this incredibly popular programme. The SMS team has already started working on the school’s carbon footprint and has motivated the staff to think green. It makes a big difference knowing they now have someone to support them with their ideas and questions. We cannot wait to see how the pupils develop their ideas and build a more sustainable future for themselves and their community.”

Green jobs

SMS has been carefully recruiting for these Sustainability Manager positions that will really make a difference to the local community. By ensuring the roles are family-friendly, SMS has enabled incredibly talented individuals get stuck into work. The role will really make the most of their skills and life experience.

Rachel Warren, SMS Sustainability Manager for Our Lady of the Visitation in Greenford said, “The very different recruitment approach SMS used for this job meant I felt able to apply for a role that I would never have done otherwise. The flexibility of the role removed significant barriers that have previously stopped me being able to move back into employment because I need to be around to support my family. It has also enabled me to move into a different career and do something I am deeply passionate about. This is an opportunity where I will be able to make a significant difference. I also get to learn a whole bank of valuable new skills. I can’t wait to get stuck in and ensure we are successful.”

Leading progress

SMS is supported by a large network of local and national environmental organisations, including ActForEaling. This network will enable SMS schools to optimise their progress over the next academic year. By collaborating with its supporters, SMS intends to inspire real change in the education sector where sustainability is properly resourced.

Natalie Bayliss, SMS Founding Director highlighted, “If the UK is to become more sustainable, it needs real people taking real action. This will only happen with proper funding and recognition. Communities need green jobs today and pupils need green skills for the future. We want local authorities, government and business to harness the eco-potential of UK schools.”
