Keep a look out for Signs of spring and share them with Field Studies. They have identified ten indicator species or events for spring. They want to capture early and late signs so keep a look out and fill out the survey.
Field Studies Council is working in partnership with the Royal Society of Biology to bring you this survey in 2025.
Record when you see one or more of the one of the spring key indicators with Field Studies. They want you to get looking for any of the ten indicator species or events shown below, and when you see one, record it using their short survey.
Ten Spring Indicator species
Anytime you are out in your local area, they would like you to look out for the ten indicator species or events for spring below. Also, record where and when you saw the sign of spring as well as the weather and temperature at the time. They want to capture early and late signs of spring, so the survey is open until 18 June 2025.

- Bluebells
- Bumblebees
- Butterflies
- Daffodils

- Dragonflies/Damselflies
- Frogspawn
- Hazel catkins
- Ladybirds

- Lawn – first cut
- Snowdrops

When looking for signs of spring and completing the survey, make sure you stay safe and are dress appropriately for the weather.
Results of the observations recorded using the survey will be on this map and chart . The results are live and updated each time a new survey is submitted.
Signs of Spring results 2024
In 2024 a total of 3,756 sightings of spring were recorded across the UK. The very first sightings recorded were daffodils near Monmouth in Wales and hazel catkins in Leatherhead, Surrey. The sign of spring observed most frequently was snowdrops, with 1,160 records submitted, followed by daffodils, with 828 sightings. You can read about the 2024 results here.
