Food Waste
The UK throws away around 9.5 million tonnes of food waste in a single year, even though 8.4 million people in the UK are in food poverty, as quoted on Business Waste. Waste food and drink in the UK creates an estimated 18 million tonnes of CO2 each year.
In Ealing, the Felix Project and City Harvest collect food that would go to waste and supply many charities and organisations with this food for redistribution. The Felix Project is based in Park Royal collects surplus food from around 300 food businesses surrounding London. City Harvest passes free food every week to over 375 community partners around London. These include food banks, schools, hostels, soup kitchens, refuges, and local community hubs. They are currently redistributing free food for 1.2 million meals a month.
